IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alma Janice
Mittleman
July 8, 1926 – July 8, 2023
Life and Times Alma Janice (Levine) Mittleman
Alma Janice (Levine) Mittleman, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, passed
peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2023, on her 97 th birthday! Her family and
friends will greatly miss her.
Alma was born in New York City, NY, to parents Sophie (Dontzig) and
Abraham Levine on July 8, 1926. She was raised initially in The Flatbush
Section of Brooklyn, NY. Then later, she moved to The Bronx in her middle
school years and eventually to The Washington Heights Section of
Manhattan.
She graduated from a business, technical high school downtown in
Manhattan. She worked for years as a bookkeeper and had aspirations to
be a professional singer in the style of Judy Garland, as she had an
incredible voice.
She married Albert Mittleman, on December 25, 1949, in NYC. Eventually,
they moved to Milford, CT, in 1957, where they bought their first small,
three-bedroom ranch, with a neighborhood of WWII Veterans' fathers, with
houses built on the GI Bill. Both she and her husband, who came from
poor, immigrant, Jewish/Eastern European beginnings, and modest
apartments in NYC, said they had died and gone to heaven because they
had a whole house! As humble as it was, it was a significant achievement
for them and their families.
She and her husband Albert opened a commercial HVAC business called
Arco Refrigeration, where she worked as the bookkeeper. They raised two
children in Milford, CT -- daughter, Lisa (Mittleman) Randall, and son,
Jonathan Mittleman.
Alma had a passion for family, tradition, and helping others. She spent so many years volunteering and chairing organizations and events the benefitted others. In particular, Hadassah, which she had a nearly life-long passion for. She initially began as a member, president/multiple times and states, and Membership Chair on the State Level.
When their kids graduated from high school and beyond, they eventually
moved to Stuart and Port St Lucie, FL, to begin yet another excellent stage
in their life. Their daughter, Lisa Mittleman, married Timothy Randall and
had two children/grandchildren – Jason and Ryan Randall. They are both
grown and leading their own happy lives.
When they moved to Florida they opened an outdoor furniture store, called
The Patio Corner, which they loved. Alma also worked for many years as a
lighting specialist at Capitol Lighting in Stuart, Florida.
Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Mittleman; her mother,
Sophie (Dontzig) Levine; her father, Abraham Levine; and sister, Phyllis
(Levine) Greenberg. She is survived and remembered by her children, Lisa
(Mittleman) Randall, and Jonathan Alan Mittleman; as well as her sister,
Norma (Levine) Hassan.
