Obituary of Audrey Kight

Stuart, FL Audrey Anne Nelson Kight, a long-time, active member of the Piper's Landing Community, died Sunday, May 17, 2015, at the Stuart Nursing and Restorative Care Center.

Audrey was born in St. Paul, MN on April 23, 1927, the daughter of Archibald and Lucille Rochenbach. She graduated from Central High School in St. Paul in June 1945. In 1947, she moved to Pittsburg to join her mother and stepfather Anton Nelson. Soon after, she was employed WDTV (later renamed KDKA), first as a receptionist and later promoted through the ranks to the Head Telephone Operator. In 1957, she joined Pittsburg Plate Glass (later PPG Industries) and eventually retired in 1971 as chief receptionist.

Audrey's life in Pittsburg was one of service, volunteering and fundraising for a long list of charities most notably Children's Hospital, Meals of Wheels, Family House, and St. Margaret's Hospital in Fox Chapel. And she was a tireless fundraiser for the Civic Light Opera, The Cancer Fund, and Animal Friends. In addition she was a Director of Animal Friends of Pittsburg for many years.

After moving to Florida in 1981 her unflagging volunteer work continued. When Lavaughn Tilton first founded Hibiscus House, Audrey gave countless hours supporting abused children. In 1994, she began her long tenure of service at Hospice of Martin County s thrift shop providing financial support and volunteering twice a week at the thrift shop. For many years During the Christmas season, Audrey collected and distributed food, funds, and toys for "Toys for Tots." Since 1985 she and her husband made significant contributions to Indian River State College in the form of scholarships for special students and building the Kight Center for Emerging Technology.

Her love of animals was legendary, especially for dogs. She was known to carry a few dog biscuits in her purse and bottled water and a dog bowl in her car just in case.

In 1971, Audrey married Alonzo B. Kight, then a vice president of Rockwell International.

Before Alonzo's retirement in 1980, she accompanied him on many business trips to Europe, the Middle and Far East, and all of the countries of South America. After his retirement they ventured to more exotic travel destinations like Kenya, Madagascar, Macchu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca.

Audrey was preceded in death by her loving husband Lon who passed on September 12, 2014.
