Obituary of Betty Lewis

BETTY CHAPMAN LEWIS,age 79, of Palm City, Florida, died on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 in Stuart, FL. Mrs. Lewis was born on March 3, 1929 in Sperryville, Virginia to David V. and Addie Lee (Jones) Chapman. Mrs. Lewis graduated from James Madison University (then Madison College) in 1950 with a degree in education. She was employed as a teacher by Hopewell, VA School Systems and Portsmouth, VA School Systems. For a period of time she was also Secretary to the President of Moe Lighting of Louisville, KY. Mrs. Lewis was a long time dedicated worker in youth sports programs.

Mrs. Lewis was a resident of Palm City since 1987. She was long time member of the Palm City Presbyterian Church and Pipers Landing Yacht and Country Club. She was an enthusiastic golfer and bridge player until recent failing health prevented activities and was active in the PEO and Questors.

Mrs. Lewis considered her main occupation for the most of her life to be a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Many have cherished her friendship because, as they often expressed it, she was such a good listener. Mrs. Lewis was predeceased by her mother Addie Lee Chapman, her brother David V. Chapman, III and a nephew Van Chapman.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by her loving husband of nearly 52 years, Peery B. Lewis of Palm City, FL, children; Peery B. Lewis, Jr. and his wife Cecilia of Potomac, MD and David M. Lewis of Avondale, PA, her father David V. Chapman, Jr. of Palm City, FL, her grandchildren; Britt, Nicholas, Veronica Lewis and Jessica, Mackenzie and David Michael Lewis, seven nieces and nephews; Scott and Lee Chapman, Carey Chamberlain, Mark and Jim Lewis, Maggie Stevens and Becky Binder. Also surviving are 9 grand nieces and nephews, her aunt Ernestine Jones of Front Royal, VA.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 19, 2008 at the Palm City Presbyterian, Church, 2700 Martin Highway, Palm City, FL. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2008 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Forest Hills Funeral Home, 2001 SW Murphy Road, Palm City, FL. An inurnment will take place at a later date in Bethany, West Virginia.
