Carol Ann Schmalholz, 87, of Stuart, died peacefully on Sunday, October 4. She was born in Cicero, Illinois, to the late John and Rita Corso. Carol was married to her late husband, Donald Schmalholz, for 50 years. They built a beautiful life together in the Chicago area, before retiring to the Treasure Coast in 1987.
Carol was always a trailblazer. In 1969, she made history as the first female elected to the City Council for their hometown of West Chicago, Illinois. She had an active career in the title insurance industry, and built a reputation for being a fair, honest manager with a gift for identifying and nurturing talented staff.
Always on the move, during retirement, Carol took up race walking (and placed first in her age group), participated in local 5k races, again, placing first in her age group. She also savored her daily walks, making many friends along the way. She enjoyed many other leisure activities including golf, travel, dancing, bowling and playing Mahjong with her amazing friends.
Carol is predeceased by her husband Donald Schmalholz, her parents John and Rita Corso, her sister Sr. Ritamary Corso, her brother Martin Corso, and her grandson Nikita Sakarovskiy.
Carol is survived by her children Robert (Jill) Schmalholz, Donald (Yulia) Schmalholz and Cheryl (Patrick) Vancura; her grandchildren, Melissa Vancura Nagel, Scott Schmalholz and Evan Schmalholz; great-grandchildren, Caleb Chagnon, Claire Chagnon, Lucy Nagel and Kade Schmalholz, and her dearest friend Frank Rizzo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 11 at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 12001 SE Federal Hwy, Hobe Sound.
