Wormwood
May 20, 1935 – October 31, 2024
Curtis Gordon Wormwood, 89, of Stuart, FL, son of E. Gordon Wormwood and Irene Gerow Wormwood, passed away unexpectedly on October 31, 2024.
He was born on May 20,1935 in Wells, Maine in a farmhouse built by his father. Curtis graduated from Wells High School in 1953 and then
graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, in 1957 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Curtis was a member of the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), and Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity. Curtis entered into pilot training with the United States Air Force in December 1957 and by 1963 after fulfilling his military commitment, he had achieved the rank of Captain. Curtis was "On Alert" at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, NH during the Cuban Missile Crisis 1962. He was a member of the 100th Bomb Wing at Pease, motto "Peace Through Strength".
Curtis worked at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, CT as an Aeronautical Engineer, but missed flying. He joined the Massachusetts Air National Guard in 1963 and stepped down in 1973. Curtis had an exciting career flying for Trans World Airlines (TWA) 1964-1988. He
retired as a Captain. Curtis held two pilot licenses: military USAF, civilian through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Curtis leaves behind his wife Joan Gatz Tope Wormwood, children Susan Forsley, and Walter Wormwood (Mary), stepchildren Donna Smith (Mark Kent), and Patrick Smith. Grandchildren Katherin Wormwood (Joseph Freeman), Curtis Forsley, Andrew Wormwood, and Gunnar Smith.
He was predeceased by his loving parents and his first wife Viola Hatch Wormwood.
Curtis loved spending summers on Sebago Lake since 1967, boating, ice hockey, target and skeet shooting, traveling, golfing, reading, and spending time with his family.
Curtis was a Master Mason (3rd degree) St James Masonic Lodge, Hampton, NH and Ocean Lodge 142 Wells, Maine 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason Shriner Bektash Temple Concord, NH.
