IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy C.
Burgess
August 15, 1947 – July 30, 2022
Dorothy Charline "Charlie" (Smith) Burgess
August 15, 1947 – July 30, 2022
Charline's story began in Warwick, GA, as the oldest child to Lewis and Dorothy Smith. In 1957, Lewis and Dorothy moved their family to Fort Pierce, FL. In the 1980's, she met and married her best friend Larry, and relocated to Port St. Lucie, FL. They found the house of their dreams on a navigable canal where she could enjoy the peace and serenity of the water and tend to her beloved orchids. She loved to watch the birds in her backyard, drink her coffee, love on her cats, and visit with loved ones on her porch.
Starting a family as a teenager, she never got to finish high school, but she persevered and flourished beautifully in her career. Starting out as a cafeteria worker with the St. Lucie County School Board, she went on to learn a new trade as a secretary in both the surveying and engineering fields. The experience and knowledge she gained along the way led her to employment with the St. Lucie County Planning and Zoning Department and eventually becoming the Administrative Assistant /Aide to Doug Coward, St. Lucie County Commissioner, from which she entered into her well deserved retirement.
She and Larry also successfully ventured into self-employment opportunities which included a bait and tackle shop, commercial offshore fishing, and commercial crabbing.
Charline loved hard and was loved by many! Her family and friends meant the world to her and it was evident by her actions. Charline's grandchildren were the twinkle of her eye. Much love was shared and many unforgettable memories were made with her.
Loved ones that cleared the path for Charline are her father, Lewis W. Smith; mother, Dorothy Lee Smith; infant daughter, Angela Denise Webb; infant brother, Lemuel Allen Smith, and brother, George A. "Bit" Smith. Loved ones that will miss Charline until they meet again are her husband of 35 years, Larry Stephen Burgess; brother, Lewis W. "Bud" Smith Jr & wife Karen Smith; sister, Shirley Curl; sons, Tate Webb & daughter in-law Claudia Webb, Ty Webb & daughter in-law Michelle; step-daughters, Renee Burgess & husband, Gerard Kierans, and Stephanie Halcomb & husband Robi Halcomb; four grandchildren, Heath Webb & wife Kastle, Dalton Webb, Hailey Halcomb, and Ryan Halcomb; one great-grandson, Dustin Webb; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
