Obituary

Dwayne Douglas Montie (June 14 th , 1970 - November 15 th , 2021)

Dwayne Douglas Montie, 51, passed away unexpectedly on November 15 th , 2021 at Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital in Stuart, Fl.

Dwayne was born in Norwich, Connecticut to his loving parents Douglas and Barbara.  He attended Norwich Free Academy High School where he was a standout runner and co-captain of the boy's cross-country team.  While there he also received the Robert Roche Scholar Athlete Award.  After his junior year, at age 17, Dwayne fulfilled a lifelong dream and joined the Connecticut Army National Guard Medical Company as a medic.   He served on the weekends and over the summer in the Guard until graduation from high school.

Next Dwayne enrolled at the University of Connecticut pursuing a BS in Exercise Physiology while still serving in the Army National Guard and ROTC at the university.  In his sophomore year, his National Guard Unit was activated to serve in Operation Desert Shield and Storm where he served as a Sergeant combat medic who led a trauma triage platoon attached to the lead elements of the First Infantry Division on the front lines of the Iraqi invasion.  He was awarded the US Army Commendation Medal three times for dedication to duty, valor, and outstanding service.

After completion of Desert Storm Dwayne returned to UCONN where he served as Battalion Commander for the Connecticut region Army ROTC comprised of students from five area colleges and universities.  He completed his undergraduate B.S. degree in exercise physiology and graduated as distinguished military graduate.

Upon graduation from UCONN, Dwayne became a commissioned officer with the 82 nd Airborne division at Ft. Bragg, NC.  He served with distinction and became an Airborne jumpmaster and qualified as an Army Ranger at US Army Ranger School at Ft. Benning, GA.   Dwayne also deployed to Panama for Operation Safe Haven where he provided medical care to Haitian and Cuban refugees.  Before his career with the Army ended, he was promoted to Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General of Brook Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas. Dwayne left active military service in 1997 when he was accepted in Medical School, but he proudly served in the Army Ready Reserve until 2007, retiring with the rank of Captain.

Dwayne started medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 1997 and he graduated in 2001.  He then completed two residencies in consecutive order, the first in Family Practice where he was Chief Resident. While there he received Resident of the year in 2001 at Columbia Hospital. Dwayne completed his next residency in Dermatology, also while at Columbia Hospital in West Palm Beach, Fl. where he graduated in 2007.

During his Dermatology residency he met his future wife, Sandra.  They married in 2007 and settled in the Treasure Coast area of Florida.  They had their daughter Emma in 2008 and they shared a wonderful family life together.  Dwayne practiced at Water's Edge Dermatology as a Dermatologist and Mohs surgeon where he provided excellent care to his patients and was loved by all who knew him.  Dwayne could light up a room with his smile and laugh, always ready with a joke, and was a compassionate, kind and modest man, never boasting of his accomplishments.  His pride and joy was his family, and he was a wonderful and loving husband and father.  He took great joy in watching Emma grow into the wonderful young lady she is today.

Dwayne is survived by his wife Sandra, daughter Emma, and parents Douglas and Barbara Montie.  He will also be dearly missed by his extended family and many friends.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Treasure Coast Food Bank.
