Obituary of Earl Ackley

Earl E. Ackley, 87, of Indiantown, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Johnson City, NY. He had been a resident of Indiantown for 11 years, having moved from Lynchburg, VA.

A three sport Athlete, Earl graduated from Johnson City High School in 1942 and then served as a Medic in the 44th Infantry Division of the US Army during World War II, earning a Purple Heart for his service. He was a scholarship basketball player at Syracuse University; after his graduation in 1949 he played for the House of David touring professional basketball team for one year. He worked for 30 years as a Purchasing Manager for General Electric in Lynchburg, VA.

He is survived by his children; Jim Ackley of Lynchburg, VA, Robert Ackley of Sunset, SC, Beth Heatwole of Richmond, VA and Jody Morgan of Roseland, VA; a brother, William Ackley of Big Bear Lake, CA; 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Oldham Ackley and brothers, Willard Ackley and Will Ackley.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, VA at a time to be announced later. Memorial contributions may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 4484 SW Citrus Blvd., Palm City, FL 34990, in Earl's memory.
