Obituary of Edward Markow

Edward Markow of Oakdale, NY and Jensen Beach, FL, passed away peacefully in his oceanfront condo surrounded by family, caregivers, hospice and loving care. He was to turn 87 in a few weeks.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army.

Ed was a proud World War II veteran. His education at Hofstra University and Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute lead to his beloved and exciting career as a engineer at Grumman Aircraft where headed new product development. Creativity, collaboration, exploration, and loyalty to both the profession and the Grumman Aircraft "family" lead to a 40 year career during the Apollo era. While at Grumman, Ed designed a spiral-spoke wheel for use on space rovers, and in retirement he continued to work creating patents and designs for a "run flat tire". Ed enjoyed volunteering at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, and encouraged municipalities to preserve estuaries that would aid the Great South Bay on Long Island. He was a former condo board president, church member, and golfer. He loved boating, sailing, and fun times at Barrett Beach on Fire Island with his family.

Ed is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret; his daughter Elizabeth and son in law Douglas Brown; his son, James and daughter in law Susan Markow; granddaughters, Rachel Markow and Lindsay Johnson; siblings, Tessie Helberg and Daniel Shybunko, and nieces and nephews.

A memorial Gathering will take place at Islandia II, 9500 South Ocean Drive , Jensen Beach, FL 34975, in the social room, on Sunday, August 17, 2014, at 4:00 PM. In addition there will be a memorial on Long Island, NY on at a date and time to be determined.
