Obituary of Edward Spring
EDWARD CHARLES SPRING, age 94, died Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the Treasure Coast Hospice in Fort Pierce. Born November 7, 1914 in Hartford, CT, he moved to the Treasure Coast in 1975, moving to Port St. Lucie, FL in 1996 from Stuart, FL.
He had been the Resident Director of Bradley Hospital in Rhode Island, the first Children's Psychiatric hospital in the world. He was involved in the original research under grants from the National Institutes of Health on the "Acting Out Child".
He and his wife founded and directed Harmony Hill School, a residential treatment center for seriously emotionally disturbed and neurologically impaired children.
He served in the Connecticut National Guard from 1931 to 1934 and from 1936 until 1939. He also served in the Army Air Force during World War II.
He was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Stuart, FL.
He was a member of the Stuart-Jensen Elks; Lions Club; Audubon Society; Anchorline Yacht Club; Phi Beta Kappa; Charter member of the National Association of Social Workers; National Association of Exceptional Children; Fellow of American Ortho-psychiatric Association.
He served on the National Board of National Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers; National Board of Council of Exceptional Children.
He was active in the United Way and the Boy Scouts of America.
He was a former member of the Governor's Commission of Aging in Rhode Island and Board of Aging of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island.
He was also a member of the national Social Science Honor Society.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Laura Spring of Port St. Lucie, FL; Sons, Sherwood C. Spring of Lorton, VA, Dr. Donald E. Spring of Wakefield, RI; and Jeffrey C. Spring of Harmony, RI; daughter, Valerie S. Begin of Chepachat, RI; 6 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 623 SE Ocean Blvd, Stuart, FL 34994. The family requests that memorials be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
