Obituary of Edwin Merkel
Loving husband and devoted father, Edwin Albert Merkel, Jr., passed peacefully on September 16, 2013, at the age of 92.
Survived by his wife of 70 years, Marcea Thompson Merkel, daughter Pamela and husband James Whipple of Medina, MN; son Stephen of West Hartford, CT, and daughter Victoria and husband Anthony Marino of Kimberton, PA. Seven grandchildren: Lindsay Whipple Kallas, Joshua Whipple, Megan Marino, Stephen Marino; Stephanie Merkel, Sarah Merkel, and Spencer Merkel, as well as five great-grandchildren: Courtney, Brooke, and Lauren Kallas, and William and Catherine Whipple.
Ed was the oldest of eight children, and is survived by three brothers: Victor, Nelson, and David Merkel all of greater Rochester, NY.
A World War II veteran, he was raised in Rochester, and attended Assumption College, in Ontario, Canada. After the service, he began a successful career in the printing and advertising business. In 1951, he and his partners bought DuBois Press and transformed it into G.M DuBois Corp, a high end printing company. They also started Blair Advertising, a boutique advertising firm. Both were ultimately sold to BBD&O in New York City in the early 1980's.
He was an avid golfer, shooting his 'age' at 83, and a 50 year member of Oak Hill CC in Pittsford, NY.
He was a man of the utmost integrity who did his best to help those in need.
After retirement, Ed and Marcea settled in Stuart, FL in 1985 and moved to Palm City in 2006.
