Eugene "Flyboy" Stewart
Eugene D. Stewart, 91, of Palm City, FL died peacefully at home December 9, 2013. He was born in Tarentum, PA on June 1, 1922. He graduated from Har-Brack High School in 1941. In 1942 Gene enlisted into the Eighth Air Force and was assigned to 305 Bombardment Group where he was stationed in Chelveston, England. He flew thirty missions during 1944-1945 WWII. He received numerous awards and medals. Gene rose in ranks to First Lieutenant B17 and later a pilot instructor.
Upon his return home he married his high school sweetheart, Jean Mills. Gene worked briefly for Allegheny-Ludlum Brackenridge Works. They built their first home in Natrona Heights, PA and had their first son, Larry, in 1949. Their daughter, Linda, was born in 1952. However, "Flyboy" missed his days of flying. In 1952 he moved his family to Miami Springs, FL and joined Eastern Air Lines as a commercial pilot. In 1958 they were blessed with their second son, Bill. Miami Springs is where they raised their three children and created a lifetime of memories. Gene soon became a Captain Pilot and flew with Eastern Air Lines for thirty years.
Upon retirement they decided to spend the summer "back home" in the Pittsburgh, PA area and the winters in Palm City, FL.
Gene enjoyed golfing, bowling and handyman type projects. He and his wife were big Pittsburgh Pirate fans and watched all the games together on TV.
Gene was known for his quick wit, humor and positive outlook on life. He was a devoted husband and father. Gene lived as a man of high morals, integrity, loyalty, pride and courage. He is a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society.
The "Pair of Jeans" (Gene & Jean Stewart) were married for sixty-seven years. He is survived by his three children, a son, Larry Stewart and his wife Lisa of Palm City, FL; a daughter, Linda Stewart and her fianc Tim Lego of Delray Beach, FL; his son, Bill Stewart and his wife Sabra of Candler, NC; his five grandchildren, Greg Stewart, Gavin Stewart, Savannah Stewart, Rebeccah Stewart and Kaitlin Stewart and his niece Marcia Herrick of Lansing, NY and several other nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of sixty-seven years Jean Stewart in September 2013 and his brother Ossie Stewart of Gainesville, FL.
Funeral Service will be at 4:00PM, Monday December 16, 2013 in Forest Hills Funeral Home in Palm City, FL.
