Frank passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 4, 2022.
He is survived by his wife, Maureen, brothers Richard (Nancy) and Charles (Pamela), sons Frank III (Erica) and Mark (Debra) and daughter-in-law, Terri Roberto. Grand children Brittany, Anna (Patrick), Frances, Matthew and Mark, Jr. great grand-child, Graham, and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank J. Zappala, Sr. and Josephine, brother, Stephen A. Zappala, son Paul Zappala and stepson, Ralph C. Roberto. Frank grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and attended Central Catholic High School, University of Notre Dame and Duquesne University School of Law. After graduating from law school, Frank joined his father's law firm but soon recognized opportunities in commercial real estate and developed shopping centers in a multi-state area. At one time, he was the largest developer for the Kmart Corporation in the 1970's and 1980's. After a successful career in real estate development, he, along with his brother Richard, started an investment banking firm, creating a financing vehicle that was used by developers across the country. Frank retired at a young age but not before his talents and influence were recognized by his peers. He had a superior intellect and an amazing grasp of any subject matter that made him an advisor and counselor to family, friends and business associates. Throughout all of his successes and accomplishments, Frank maintained a humble and modest demeanor that made him approachable by people from all walks of life.
After his retirement, he and Maureen moved to south Florida where they began their life of travel and charity work. Over the years, they traveled the world, eventually setting foot on every continent. They always made a point of visiting the small cities and villages around Europe and Asia and befriended the local restaurant owners and wine makers. He left a lasting impression wherever he went.
Frank and Maureen were involved in many charities throughout their years in Florida including the Hibiscus Foundation and Martin Memorial Hospital where Frank also served on the Board of Directors. They hosted many events with a flair that usually made the social pages.
His warm smile, comforting words, soothing advice and gentle leadership will be greatly missed. Friends are welcome on Monday from 3-5 at Forest Hills Funeral Home, 2001 SW Murphy Road, Palm City, FL 34990
A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1454 SW Mapp Road, Palm City, FL, 34990.
