Obituary

On May 25, 2020 Frank Russo, passed away at the age of 80 at his home in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Frank was born on October 29, 1939 in Carafa, Italy; the son of Arturo and Catarina Russo.  Frank worked on the family farm in Italy before migrating to America at the young age of 16.  He boarded the S.S. Andrea Doria in Genoa, Italy, in July of 1956. On the last night of the nine day journey, the ship collided with another passenger ship the MS Stockholm. The Andrea Doria was broadsided by MS Stockholm and tore a gash 30 feet deep into the steel hull, and the watertight compartments of the Andrea Doria. Frank made his way through the oily seawater to the upper deck. Although, he did not see his sponsors (the Guzzis) in the commotion, he felt assured they were safe from harm because they had been in the ballroom on upper level. He gave his life jacket to a frightened woman. He helped the elderly and children climb rope ladders and nets into lifeboats that were met by several ships who answered the SOS calls. Several hours later, he jumped into a lifeboat and was rescued. Eleven hours after the collision he watched the Andrea Doria go under, swallowed by the Atlantic Ocean with one last groan. Frank learned later; his sponsors were not of the survivors.

Frank started his own family roots in Easton, Pennsylvania and later moved to Florida. He married his sweetheart Patricia Irene Russo and had five terrific children. When he came to Florida, he started the family swimming pool business which is still current today. The love of his family farm in Italy inspired him to have the same in America, where he enjoyed raising animals and gardening. He took pride in caring for his fig trees, goats and chickens. He loved his animals and cherished them until he finally could not any more. Frank was a proud man. His life's motto was to live free of the encumbrances that debt brought. He did what he wanted and lived his life his way.

He was predeceased by his parents Arturo and Catarina Russo and his loving wife Patricia Irene Russo. He leaves behind his son Arthur Russo, Catherine Russo-Blevins (Johnny), Margret Russo, Frank Russo (Luanne), Mario Russo (Nicole), nine wonderful grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren
