Frederick J Schweiger's Obituary
Fred was the beloved spouse of Nelda Schweiger (nee Fowler) for 67 years. Loving father of Michael Schweiger; Sharon Schweiger Smith (Joel); and preceded in death by his dear son Daniel (survived by Mary) in 2002. Adored grandfather of Katelyn Humphries ( Kyle); Joseph Schweiger; Brian Schweiger (Flavia); Eric Schweiger and Chris Shirley. Cherished great grandfather of Gabriela Schweiger. He is also survived by his devoted caregiver Annmarie Barrett and his Nephew Andrew Bowers.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Schweiger and Myrtle Schweiger (nee Goettsche) and his siblings Jean Tyinski ( Chester); Beatrice Bowers ( William); and Joseph II ( Rosemary).
Fred was born In Detroit, Michigan and attended school until the 8th grade when he left in order to help out his family. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines when he was 17 years old and proceeded to enlist in the Marines in 1946 at the end of WW2 where he was stationed in the Pacific Theater on Hawaii, Midway Island and on the U.S.S Midway where he was a cook and a guard for those who had been captured.
On his honorable discharge in 1946 from the Marines, Frederick returned to Detroit, Michigan to again help out his family until he became employed by General Motors in 1953 and worked there for 40 years until he retired in 1993 having never been late or missing a day. He was thrown a retirement party at the Piquette Truck & Bus Group plant where they closed down production for a few hours and it was attended by all the employees and managers. He was honored with a brand new car.
Fred met his wife Nelda at a roller rink in Detroit, Michigan. Girls would wait in line to skate with him because he was quite the casanova while skating.Though his future wife Nelda did not wait in line and this caught his attention.They fell in love at first sight and were married on June 6th, 1953. Nelda was offered a brand new car and a college education at Wayne State University by her father Fount, if she did not marry Fred. Fortunately, she did not accept his offer.
Fred and Nelda traveled all over the United States in their motor home. Later, they sold the motor home and bought a 2nd home in Jensen Beach, Florida.They then were both snowbirds between Michigan and Florida as well as traveling the world going to all 7 continents: snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef; riding camels at the Pyramids; boating on gondolas in Venice and walking the grounds of the Taj Mahal amongst many, many adventures.
Fred was very devoted to his Christian Faith by attending the Church of Christ for many years, most recently Gateway in South gate, Michigan and Stuart Church of Christ in Florida.
Fred was an incredibly kind, caring and compassionate man who made sure all of his family were well taken care of. We never wanted for anything growing up or in later years. Anyone who knew him loved him as he was always laughing, smiling and joking around. He loved telling stories. And everyone loved hearing them every time he told them. He also loved dancing and being silly. And he was quite the horseshoe player and try as the might none of his grandchildren could beat him. He also was a master gardener and won many awards from the city of Dearborn Heights for his beautiful yard with it's perfect green grass and beautiful plants and flowers.
We are asking in lieu of flowers that a donation be made in his name and honor to the "Make a Wish Foundation". He still had the curiosity and joy of a child at 92.
