Obituary

Geneva Oraham (née Radford), late of Palm City, passed away on October 6, 2023 at home surrounded by her children after recent health challenges.

Geneva was born on September 18, 1935 in Endicott, Virginia, and went on to become a highly respected and skilled registered nurse, graduating from the Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing in Roanoke. During her time in nursing school, Geneva served as Glee Club president and was elected Snow Queen. She was also known for her jitterbug skills.

During her nursing career, she had various postings, including psychiatric and emergency room nursing. After graduating from nursing school, she moved to Chicago to take a hospital position and met the love of her life, Walton, in 1958. Seven days later, they were married.

Children came quickly, and as a young mother of three boys, she worked nights while her husband worked days and somehow balanced all of her commitments with a minimum of sleep.

Geneva was a true coal miner's daughter, and was admired for her selflessness and tireless devotion to others.  "Auntie Ginny" was known for her loving, kind, and sweet nature, as well as her competitive streak when playing card games. She enthusiastically looked for opportunities to serve others. Her cooking was renowned among her family and friends, alike. She was seemingly able to make anything taste delicious. Everyone asked for her recipes.

Although Geneva kept her active nursing credentials current until a little over a year ago, she had been retired from the profession for several years. Geneva went on to work alongside her husband, a master jeweler, and co-managed their business and charmed customers. She was resourceful, and, when they could not find a reliable source to have client's beaded pieces re-strung, developed her own expert beading skills. Working with her husband, Walton, Geneva also acquired an eye for art and antiques.

In her free time, she enjoyed family gatherings, as well as being a closet Rod Stewart and Tom Jones fan. She knew what she liked. On one of her last meals out, Geneva ordered a plate of biscuits and gravy – you can't keep a Virginia girl down!

Geneva was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother; she was preceded in death by her husband, Walton, to whom she was married for nearly 57 years, until his death in 2015. Geneva is survived by her sons, Victor (spouse, Nahrin), Gregory (spouse, Elizabeth "Liz"), and Steven (spouse, Jim), as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Family and friends of Geneva are invited to attend a memorial service in her honor on November 3, 2023, at 4:00 pm at Forest Hills Funeral Home, Palm City Chapel, located at 2001 Southwest Murphy Road, Palm City, Florida 34990.
