Obituary of George Conklin

George M. Conklin, 90, of Palm City, Florida, died March 12, 2012 at Water's Edge, Palm City.

Born in Roselle Park, New Jersey, he had been a resident of Florida for 32 years, living in Boynton Beach, Stuart and Palm City coming to Florida from Mendham, New Jersey.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 75th Infantry Division and fought at the Battle of the Bulge.

He received Mechanical and Industrial Engineering degrees from Clarkson College of Technology, Potsdam, New York in 1947, a Master of Science degree from Newark (New Jersey) City College in 1951 and an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Clarkson in 1987.

Before retiring he was the president of M & M/Mars Candies in Hackettstown, New Jersey for 30 years.

He was a member of the Evergreen Club, Palm City. He was Senior Golf Champion at Roxiticus (NJ) Golf Club in 1972 and at the Somerset Hills Golf Club in 1981. He was commissioned honorary commodore in the Texas Navy in 1973 and elected life member of the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame in 1980. He received the Clarkson University "Golden Knight" award for distinguished service and was listed in the "Who's Who in Finance and Business". He was a member of the Tau Beta Phi Engineering Society, the Clarkson University Board of trustees 1976-1986 and was the recipient of the Key to The City of Cleveland, Ohio. He was the chairman of the Chocolate Manufacturer's Association and was on the Board of Directors of the National Confectioners Association.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Jean W. Conklin of Palm City; a son, Blair W. Conklin of San Francisco, California and a granddaughter, Stephanie Lyon. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Andrea Lyon and two siblings.
