IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Georgiann Marie
Martin
September 13, 1927 – July 21, 2021
On July 21, 2021, Georgiann (Jan) Martin of Stuart FL, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 with her children by her side.
Jan was born on September 13, 1927 to Frances and Charles Dodt and grew up with her sister Barbara in a small but tight knit community in the Finnish town of Kaleva, Michigan. Jan excelled academically from elementary through graduate school, which lead to a BS in bacteriology from Michigan State University in 1949, and then onto an MS in Medical Technology from Wayne State University in 1951.
Jan's academic experience and passion for learning instilled in her a lifelong love of science, and as a voracious reader, she continued to read scientific texts, in addition to many other types of nonfiction, her entire life.
Jan met her husband, Dick, at MSU and after graduation they moved across the country to Arlington and then Wayland Massachusetts where she and Dick raised their five children. In 1986, Jan and Dick relocated to warm and sunny Stuart Florida where they enjoyed retirement and visits from their family in their lovely new home.
Throughout her life, Jan exemplified the spirit of volunteerism and community wherever she resided; she was a volunteer in Wayland during her children's school years, and for several other organizations including Church of the Holy Spirit and the American Cancer Society.
During Jan's 30+ years in Stuart she became a communicant and member of the vestry at St. Mary's Church and volunteered for over ten years at Mary's Kitchen where she established an extremely popular annual event known as "Jan's Fish Fry" for those in need of a hot meal, which she organized and funded herself.
Jan was an avid crafter, enjoying various styles of needlework which included needlepoint, knitting, and sewing doll clothes for her granddaughters. Her favorite needlework in later years included the knitting of countless prayer shawls and infant caps for donation at Martin Memorial Hospital. Jan left a legacy of love by knitting many baby blankets for future great grandchildren.
Jan became a prolific painter while at Sand Hill Cove and was very proud to have one of her paintings selected for the cover of the monthly newsletter.
Jan was preceded in death by her loving husband of 39 years Dick, her beloved son, Kirk, and her dear sister Barbara Paton of Michigan.
Jan is survived by her children Deborah DeLuca, Richard Martin Jr (Jackie), Nancy Danner, Jacqueline Martin-Rasmussen (Brian), her daughter in law Carolyn Martin, her ten much loved grandchildren Matt (Alex) DeLuca, Jenna (Matt) Nastri, Jeff (Kana) DeLuca, Tracy (Ted) Offner, Brad Danner, Katie and Kyle Rasmussen, Carly, Amy and Brooke Martin, and two great granddaughters, Gia Nastri and Evelyn Diskin-DeLuca and four nieces and nephews and their families.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mary's Kitchen, St Mary's Church Stuart Florida.
