Obituary
Granger E. "Sam" Sutton
On September 30, 2022 Granger E. Sutton, known to all as "Sam" transitioned to life eternally with our Lord and Savior surrounded by his loving family. His strong will, resilience and sense of independence remained with him until the very end. Born and raised in Norfolk, VA on February 13, 1949, he was the son of the late Dorothy (Kes) and George Sutton and brother of the late Josie Springs and Tess Watts. He attended Booker T. Washington High School and his love of cooking and his mastery of skills came from working in a restaurant in Norfolk, VA called Gordon's in the 1960s. He then became a cook for the army and his journey eventually brought him to Long Island, NY at the age of 21. He worked several jobs that included coaching sports teams most notably the basketball team where he spent time mentoring so many in the Long Beach School District community. He then began working at the Long Beach Medical Center. He married his sweetheart and soulmate, Marcene Evelyn, on December 13, 1987 and they relocated to Port St. Lucie, FL In 2003.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 34 years, Marcene, daughter, Tonya Sutton of Norfolk, VA, twin children Robyn Sutton-Fernández (Diana) of Atlanta, GA and Ronnie L. Sutton of Long Beach, NY, Sons, Craig Portee (Tina Antonello) of Babylon, NY and Wayne Portee (Shawna) of Port St. Lucie, FL, Rodney Cole of Long Beach, NY and Renee Cole of Queens, NY; Grandchildren Rondaye, Marke, Teicoria, Terrell, Teineshia, Chris, Alyssa, Shyla, Romelo, Alana, and Giana; five great-grandchildren, Siblings, Vernon Sutton of Norfolk, VA, and Valerie Gilbert (Harold) of Gordon Banks, VA, Godfrey Banks of VA and Linda Lewis, his dear nephew Lawrence Springs of Maryland along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He also leaves behind his in-laws Cynthia Ward (Everton) of Port St. Lucie, FL, Margaretta Goodridge (Sydney) of New York, Gloria Weeks (Tony) of Barbados, Wendy Burke of Barbados, Samuel Evelyn (Gloria) of the United Kingdom.
He also leaves behind his dear friends and neighbors Joseph and Deb Mastrolillo whom he shared many years of laughter and stories with, along with the amazing neighbors of Southbend Lakes, Port St. Lucie, FL. In addition he leaves behind all the incredible friendships he made throughout his journey as his openness, kindness and generosity of spirit knew no bounds.
Sam had a passion for bringing people together through his joy of cooking and barbecuing. He was and will always be the "Grillmaster!" He would sit back and smile with pure joy and jubilation as his family and friends enjoyed the feast he provided while listening to great music.
He enjoyed watching basketball and football and loved his western movies and in fact knew all the words that volume was not necessary!
Above all he loved his family and friends and truly enjoyed seeing everyone being at their happiest. His infectious smile and laughter will be remembered by all who loved him and his legacy will carry on with the wisdom and influence he imparted on so many.
