Hattie Gertrude Florant, born to John Baptiste Florant and Philomen Baron in the village of Mahaut on the island of Dominica, British West Indies in 1941.
Growing up, she attended the government school system from which she graduated. She became a teacher and was loved by her students. Her male students would get the best mango and call it "a teacher Hattie"! She also represented her Village to become Miss Mahaut (comparable to her becoming Miss Port St. Lucie).
Hattie migrated to the United States in 1961 where she worked for an insurance company for many years and then for Chase Manhattan Bank, from which she retired. Her future husband, Joseph Leblanc, who she grew up, knowing as a neighbor and schoolmate in Dominica migrated to the United States in May 1962.
They met at Hattie's uncles home in Queens, New York and deepened their relationship. Joseph joined the US Army one month after he entered the United States and asked Hattie to wait for him. This she did faithfully for 3 years until he returned from Germany in 1965 and they got married in October of that same year. The marriage produced three wonderful daughters Denise (currently residing in Tampa Florida), Diane (North Brunswick, New Jersey) and Joyce, who went to be with the Lord in 2006.
Hattie was a faithful loving wife and mother who loved to garden, cook, bake and concentrate on her family. She was known for maintaining a super clean home and holding the family together. Hattie was a prayer warrior who read her Bible daily, prayed for her family and volunteered in her community to help the less fortunate. She was known to be a giver, always giving away fruit and vegetables from her garden, gifts such as homemade baked goods, Sorrel, or Ginger beer. Her home was always a place of peace and refuge for many family and friends who came to visit, including many young people, who loved to spend time with Auntie Hattie .
She leaves behind her loving husband, Joseph to whom she was married to for 57 years, her daughters Denise and Diane, her son-in-law Keith Fields, her 4 grandchildren - Christopher Griffith, Gregory Griffith, Dana Fields, and Kendall Fields, her sisters - Mary Riviere and Gloria Lafond, many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends and acquaintances too numerous to mention.
She will be greatly missed.
