Helen Holland Salisbury-Gross passed away peacefully in Palm City, Florida on September 15, 2024. She was 100, almost 101 years old.
She was born in Bedford, Indiana on December 15, 1923 to parents, Dr. D. J. and Zella (Kinser) Holland, the youngest of 5 children. She is survived by her daughter, Creggie Salisbury Henderson and son, Andrew J. Salisbury II (Mona) of Palm City, Florida, grandson Andrew J. Salisbury III of Jensen Beach, granddaughter Grace Salisbury Grindler (Ryan) and 3 great-grandchildren: Rebecca, Jack and Charlotte Grindler of Palm City. She is also survived by a niece, Helen H. Schmidt of Bellingham, Washington, and a nephew James Holland (Sally) of Bloomington, Minnesota as well as 3 great nephews.
In addition, she is survived by many members of her second husband's family, especially close are Jody and Larry Harmon. Her husband Dr. C. Jackson Salisbury predeceased her in 1987 and also her second husband Carl R. (Jim) Gross in 2010 both of whom are buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Her four brothers William, Robert, John and Henry also predeceased her. Helen was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Daughters of the American Revolution, Tri Kappa and the Unique Club. She was also active in her churches in various capacities serving on the vestry and leading the women's group.
After graduating from University High School in Bloomington, IN, Helen attended Indiana University where she met her first husband, Jack Salisbury. It was during WWII. They married and then went to work to help the war effort. Jack enlisted in the Army and Helen worked as a plating chemist for Curtis-Wright. After the war ended, they started their family and continued their education.
Jack earned his doctorate from Indiana University and then became a professor of Education at the University of Virginia where Helen earned her Master's degree. Jack continued his teaching next at Temple University. Helen taught child development at Harcum Junior College, and earned her Doctorate in Early Childhood Education at Temple University. She wrote a book Diagnosing the Individual Needs for Early Childhood Education and then started her own Salisbury Infant
Development Center in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. During all these years she was a loving wife and mother, extraordinary hostess, and an enthusiastic participant in club and church activities.
After Jack passed away, Helen attended a high school reunion and reconnected with her high school sweetheart. They married in 1994 and returned to their "roots" in Bloomington, Indiana. They enjoyed being DJ's at a local radio station and played music of the Big Band era. They also interviewed several artists from that past era. Helen and Jim enjoyed traveling and journeyed to Hawaii, Alaska and England as well as trips to visit family and friends in the contiguous United States.
Family will welcome friends who may call at Forrest Hills for a viewing on Tuesday, 9/24 from 5-7pm. A funeral service is planned at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Palm City, on Wednesday, 9/25 at 10 am. Helen will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
