IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James David
Campbell
October 25, 1938 – September 24, 2024
James (David) passed away unexpectedly on September 24, 2024, at the age of 85. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee on October 25, 1938, son of James Henry Buxbaum and Dorothy Campbell. He graduated from Christian Brothers College High School in Memphis which provided material for some of his many enjoyable stories told to his friends at weekly gatherings. We heard about the cotton company, the shoe store, and the endless golf stories. David went on to follow his father's love and passion for the game of golf not only by learning to play very well but also in learning the business as a professional golf course superintendent. He followed his father's PGA career as a professional golfer which afforded David the opportunity to occasionally play with well-known pro golfers such as Calvin Peete…which also provided additional story material.
In addition to caring for private and public golf courses in South Florida, David worked for a land development corporation in Texas and consulted with the elder Robert Trent Jones in designing a golf course. David often related the story about his dog nipping Mr. Jones' hand while riding in his car. But probably David's most enjoyable time was spent in Bermuda working as superintendent of the well-known Port Royal and Mid-Ocean Golf Clubs. He was most proud of the work he accomplished while he lived and worked for 15 years in this beautiful island paradise.
David returned to the states where he retired and has lived for the past 25 years with his wife, Elise, and partner in golf at the Martin Downs Golf Club in Palm City, Florida. He also found a circle of golf buddies that have played together regularly for these past many years.
David is survived by his loving family, wife Elise (Fitzgerald), of Palm City, Fl; sister, Rebecca Lynn Buxbaum Purvis (Brian) of Memphis, Tenn.; daughter Laura Ann Gullicksen, Cumming, Ga; daughters (by marriage) Jennifer Caroline Whitaker, Springfield, Ky; Melissa Eileen Shaffer (Michael), Dublin, Ga.; and twelve grandchildren, Riley Wayne Slaughter, Reece Logan Slaughter, Dillon Alexander Knight, Madison Elise Knight, Josephine Claire Knight, Audrey Caroline Knight, Emerson Robert Knight, Emily Nicole Hicks Ferri (Zack), Tyler Loren Hicks, Jack Preston Hicks, Mira Evette Shaffer, Madison Elizabeth Rymer (Patrick) and one great-grandchild Jax Michael Ferri.
At his request, there will be no services. As a veteran of the U.S.A.F. his ashes will be interred at the national cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee.
For the past nine months, his immediate family has been "fighting the good fight" to help daughter, Jennifer, battle a brain cancer diagnosis last January. He would want any donations or gifts be directed to her GoFundMe site: Help Jennifer Beat Glioblastoma Brain Cancer (https://gofund.me/e480bead.) as this road is long and in need of many helping hands to win.
