Obituary of James Garland

James Edward Garland, 89, died Monday, September 24, 2007 at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart.

Born in Lakeland, FL, he has resided in Palm City for 12 years coming from Miami. He was also a former resident of Gainesville and Tallahassee.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was a Major with the Army Construction Engineers and a decorated combat veteran. He was awarded the purple heart and the bronze star medal.

He received his Bachelor of Architecture from University of Florida where he is a Hall of Fame Graduate. While at U of F, Jim was a member of Blue Key; Cadet Commander of the ROTC Unit; Phi Delta Kappa.

He earned his Mater of Education from University of Miami.

He was a Professor at the University of Florida School of architecture and then became the State School Architect.

He was a retired architect; former President of Connell and Associates and former Vice-President of Carr, Smith and Associates, both in Miami.

He was also the former Miami-Dade County School Board architect for seven years and supervised construction of over 100 schools.

During his career Jim was partner in charge or architect of record for many notable buildings, among them: First Federal Building, Miami; McDonald Douglas Co, Titusville; Florida Memorial College, Miami; Sunland Training School, Miami; University of South Florida Medical School; Florida Presbyterian College; Pan American Airways Overhaul Facility; Florida Building at the New York Worlds Fair; Bayfront Center, St. Petersburg; Master Plan for the Naval Recruit Training Center, Orlando; Tamiami Airport Passenger Terminal; Titusville Airport; Panama City Airport; and Miami Metro Zoo.

He was past board member and past president of Florida State Board of Architecture; served on National Council of Architectural Registration Boards; Florida Association of AIA; Commissioner, Education and Research, Florida Association of the AIA; founding Director of Architectural Guild in support of U of F, Department of Architect and U of M, Department of Architect; Citizens Board, University of Miami.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Marian Garland of Palm City; sons, G. Jeffery Garland of Sanford and James E. Garland, Jr. of Jupiter; brother, John B. Garland of Cape Coral and wife Peck; two grandchildren, Ted Garland of Jacksonville and Brook Bryan of Jacksonville.

Services: A gathering will be held at 12:30 PM, Saturday, September 29, 2007 at Monarch Country Club in Palm City. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Lakeview Cemetary, 1002 E. Parker Street, Lakeland, FL 33801 with military honors provided by U. S. Army.
