Obituary of James Sixsmith

James Martin Sixsmith, 88, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of Garnet Mosgrove and Martha (Martin) Sixsmith. A graduate of Peabody High School in Pittsburgh, he continued his education at Notre Dame University, South Bend, Indiana and Carnegie Tech (Carnegie Mellon) in Pittsburgh.

He was a member of the Pittsburgh Railroad Club and Phi Nu Fraternity. During World War II, he was a Civilian Ordinance Inspector for the US Army.

He traveled with his family throughout the western United States, supervising the installation of train controls for Union Switch and Signal Company. Later, he was a stockbroker for Kay Richards (Parker Hunter) in Pittsburgh.

Following retirement, he and his wife lived in Point Chautauqua, New York where he was active in the life of the Westfield Presbyterian Church. After spending several winters in Florida, they moved to Port St. Lucie, where he was an active member of the First Congregational Church, serving as a trustee for many years.

He was a proud volunteer of the Port St. Lucie Medical Center as a member of the auxiliary. Jim was an avid model train collector and renewed his boyhood hobby of stamp collecting. He was a longtime member of the American Philatelic Society.

Survivors include Thelda Marie Price Sixsmith, his wife of 66 years; his daughter, Suzanne Waldron and husband Chuck of Kitchener, Ontario; daughter, Martha Beachler and husband Alan of Port St. Lucie, FL; son, James Martin Sixsmith II, of Clearwater, FL; and grandson, James Garnet Sixsmith of Mt. Lebanon, PA.

Viewing will be held at the First Congregational Church of Christ on March 30, 2010 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with service following at 11:00 AM to celebrate his life. Interment will be at the Forest Hills Memorial Park.
