IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James P.
Tierney
February 5, 1937 – October 19, 2021
In Loving Memory
Dr. James Patrick Tierney of Palm City, Florida and Southampton, New York passed away peacefully on October 19, 2021. He was 84 years old.
Jim was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 5, 1937, to Stephen Patrick and Mary Gotard Tierney. Graduating early from Bushwick High School, he attended Fordham University earning his degree in Pharmacy. While at Fordham he completed the Reserve Officer Training program and was commissioned as an officer in 1958. He served as a rifle range officer at Fort Sam Houston in Texas before following his dream of medical school at the Philadelphia College of Medicine, where he was President of the Class of 1964. He earned medical licenses in four states, and opened a medical practice in Maspeth, New York.
Over his 40 year career he made many house calls, delivered babies, and arranged adoptions, often treating multiple generations of the same family. He loved the art as much as the science of medicine, and would spend extra time talking to his patients to learn more about their whole lives.
Before starting medical school, Jim returned to New York and married Kathleen Allen on August 27, 1960. As Jim and Kathleen welcomed two sons and a daughter to their home in Garden City, New York, you would often find Jim at the center of a circle of family and friends telling tales that would end in laughter -- or maybe a groan. Between supporting his children's activities and enjoying time with friends and family, he was active in the Elks and the Cherry Valley Club. He particularly enjoyed creating imaginative meals and wine pairings for dinner parties. The Tierney's built a summer home in Southampton, New York where he reveled in the sunsets and bemoaned the chill that always started at Labor Day, and enjoyed gatherings with friends at the North Fork Country Club..
As their children grew and married, Jim and Kathleen Tierney moved to the Palm City community of Harbour Ridge in Florida in 2001. There Jim continued his storytelling as a frequent dinner host, an avid golfer, and the owner of a discerning palate that he shared with the Wine Club at Harbour Ridge.
James P. Tierney leaves his wife of 61 years, Kathleen Allen Tierney, his son Terrence and wife Lynne, his son Christopher and wife Margaret LaMonica, and his daughter Suzanne Johnson and husband Paul Johnson, and five grandchildren, Caitlyn, Maggie, Phoebe, Kevin, and Quinn, as well as numerous members of extended family and great friends.
A wake will be held on Tuesday, Nov 2, 2021 from 3 to 5pm at Forest Hills funeral home, 2001 SW Murphy Road, Palm City, Fl. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov, 3 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1454 SW Mapp Rd, Palm City, FL 34990.
The family appreciates the kind care offered to Dr. Tierney at Treasure Coast Hospice.
**Immediately following the entombment there will be a reception at the Harbor Ridge Country Club for all who want to attend.**
