Obituary of Jean Carr

Jean C. Carr, 95, of Palm City, Florida, died December 11, 2010 at The Water's Edge Extended Care, Palm City.

Born in Zanesville, Ohio, she had been a resident of Stuart and Palm City for 35 years coming from Lansing, Michigan.

She was a fashion model having begun her career while in high school. She received her teaching certificate from Montevallo University, Montevallo, Alabama. She taught night school and was an office manager at Delco-Frigidaire Corporation, Dayton. After her marriage she continued her modeling career in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, Washington. She completed her bachelor's and master's degrees at Michigan State University, Lansing, where she remained as an academic advisor and counselor. She also continued her modeling career in Detroit. She was active with the PTA and the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. She was a local and state tournament golfer and a duplicate bridge player, winning many trophies in both areas. As a certified parliamentarian, she was a board member of many organizations and president of several women's golf associations around the country. Among those clubs were the Presidio Golf Club of San Francisco, Walnut Hills Country Club, East Lansing, Miles Grant Country, Stuart and was a founding member of the Martin Downs Country Club Women's Golf Association, Palm City. She was a volunteer at Edward W. Sparrow Hospital, Lansing and the Martin Memorial Medical Center, Stuart. She was an active environmentalist and belonged to The Sierra Club, Audubon and the Save the Everglades Coalition. She and her husband were also boaters and members of the Power Squadron. She was also a long time member of the American Association of University Women, the Historical Society and the Elliot Museum.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Barch of Mackinac Island, Michigan; a son Ronald P. Carr of San Diego, California; 2 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James Preston Carr and a brother Dr. Glen Callander.
