Obituary of Joan Johnston
Joan M. Johnston, 85, of Palm City, FL, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at the Treasure Coast Hospice, Hay-Madeira House, Stuart, FL.
Joan was born in Toledo, OH and raised her family in Walbridge, OH. She retired to N. Fort Myers over 20 years ago, and spent the past 2 years as a resident of Palm City.
Beloved Joan attended Ma Chere' Hair Style Academy, was hired as a stylist, and went on to manage Bonnie's Beauty Bar in Walbridge for several years. She soon realized her calling was in the field of education, and went on to teach young women the art of cosmetology at Whitmer High School in Toledo. During her teaching career she was appointed as VICA Coordinator, which enabled her to take an active role ensuring her students' success in achieving state certification and future employment. She thoroughly enjoyed her retirement years at Horizon Village, participating in a variety of activities with many friends. Upon moving to Palm City in later years, she became a member of Sunlight Community Church in Port St. Lucie, where she enjoyed singing praise and worship with the fellowship of her Sunlight family.
Joan was an inspiration of strength and perseverance to all who knew her. Survivors include her son, John E. Johnston of Maumee, OH; her daughters, Judith Marie Johnston of Erie, MI and Jeri-Anne Johnston of Royal Palm Beach, FL; her six grandchildren, Sarah, Abby, Scott, Samuel, Andrew and Matthew, and seven great-grandchildren, Brennen, Madison, Elizabeth, Riley, Grant, Joshua and Emma. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years in 2014, Eugene F. Johnston; her brother Thomas Doncoes, and her sister Mary Eda Dietrich.
Memorial services will be held for family and friends in Florida at Sunlight Community Church, and in Ohio at Marblehead Lighthouse. Dates will be forthcoming to those interested in attending.
