Obituary of John Johnstone
John W. Johnstone, Jr., 78, of Palm City, Florida died at home March 27, 2011.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, was a resident of Palm City, moving to Florida from Connecticut.
Mr. Johnstone had a distinguished business career, retiring in 1996 as Chairman and CEO of Olin Corporation. He spent his first 22 years in sales, marketing and management positions with Oldbury Chemical and Hooker Chemical Company; leaving, in 1975 to become President of the Airco Alloys division of Airco, Inc. Mr. Johnstone served on the boards of Arch Chemical, Olin Chemical Company, Fortune Brands, The Conference Board, McDermott Corporation, Phoenix Home Life and Research Corporation. He Chaired the Executive Board of the Fairfield County Boy Scouts, as well as the United Way Campaign of Stamford, CT. He received a BA in Chemistry and Physics (54) and an Honorary Doctorate (90) from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. He was also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.
John was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Palm City, Florida; Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club; Blindbook Country Club Purchase, NY; Woodway Country Club, Darien; Clove Valley Rod and Gun Club, LaGrangeville, NY; The Rolling Rock Club, Ligonier, PA; the Soap and Detergent Association; the Chemical Manufacturers Association; the Chemical Heritage Foundation; the Chemists Club; the American Productivity and Quality Center.
His wife Claire Johnstone of Palm City, sons Thomas Johnstone and James Johnstone, both of Ridgefield, CT and Robert Johnstone of Newtown Square, PA and 6 grandchildren survive Mr. Johnstone.
Service: There will be memorial service at 10 am on April 1, 2011 at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Palm City.
