Obituary of Joseph Nealon

Reverend Joseph W. Nealon. 93, of Palm City, Florida, died May 26, 2009 at his home. Born in New Jersey he had been a resident of Palm City for 24 years coming from Haworth, New Jersey. He was a Roman Catholic Priest, ordained on May 18, 1940. He had been the Assistant Pastor of St. Vincent Church, Bayonne New Jersey from 1940 to 1965; Chaplain of the Bayonne Council of the Boys Scouts of America; a founder and member of the board of director and president for 2 years of the Bayonne Community Chest; the director of the Bayonne CYO from 1941 to 1965 and the Assistant Director of the Hudson County CYO; Auxiliary Military Chaplain at the Bayonne Naval Base and the USO-NCCS Club Moderator during World War II; the Mount Carmel Guild Moderator and local representative of the Associated Catholic Charities; chaplain of the Knights of Columbus Star of the Sea Council #371; Director of the Archdiocesan CYO Center and the Hudson County CYO; Administrator and Pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Haworth and Chaplain of Knights of Columbus Council from 1967 to 1985. He was on the Newark Archdiocesan Assessment Finance Committee for two years and served two terms in the Archdiocesan Senate of Priests chairing the Temporalities Committee. He retired from the Archdiocese of Newark on December 1, 1985 and relocated in Palm City, assisting at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Palm City for 24 years; was the Faithful Friar of The Fr. McGivney Assembly 1764 of the Knights of Columbus, Stuart, Florida and coordinator of the Semi Annual Days of Recollection for retired priests living within the Diocese of Palm Beach. He was also an avid New York Giants fan.

Survivors include his dear friend Loyola "Honey" Smith of Palm City; nieces, Sister Marie Tansey S.C. of Elizabeth, New Jersey and Catherine T. Tansey of Spring Lake and a nephew Frank Tansey of Alexandria, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine S. Tansey.

SERVICES: Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Palm City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on May 30, 2009 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. In New Jersey, visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Haworth, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, New Jersey. For those who wish, contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Chapel Building Fund at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, PO Box 1162, Palm City, FL 34991 in Father Nealon's memory. Arrangements in Florida are under the direction of the Forest Hills Funeral Homes Palm City Chapel and in New Jersey by the Frech Funeral Home, Dumont, NJ.
