June Schlanger, a long-time resident of Harbour Ridge, passed away quietly on Wednesday, October 9, at Grand Oaks Memory Care after a four year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.  She is survived by her husband, Carl, her son Eric, daughter-in-law Stacie and grandchildren Jack and Skye.  Also, her brother, Donald, his wife Carol, nieces Robin, Heather, Brooke, Ellen and nephews Andrew and Jimmy.

Born in Huntland, Tennessee in 1936 where she resided most of her early childhood.  She then spent her late teens in Chicago, Illinois where her parents Buddy and Carol Pickney worked and lived.  June was Miss Illinois 1958 and third runner-up Miss U.S.A. 1958 in the contest that is held in California each year.  She went on to become a top fashion model and starred in a documentary for Hilton Hotels and KLM Airlines, traveling around the world when filming.  In 1963 she moved to Paris and modeled throughout Europe.  In 1964 she met her husband Carl in Amsterdam and after a short whirlwind engagement they were married in Copenhagen, Denmark where she continued to model and was featured in many Danish and Swedish magazines.

Upon returning to the U.S., her son was born and raised in Laurel Hollow, L.I.  June was an active golfer and as the Ladies' President at Cold Spring Country Club, she became the first women member to serve on the Board of Directors of the club.

June and Carl built their first home in Harbour Ridge in 1986, and when they retired full time in 1992, they built their present home in Tallowwood Village.  June again, was very active in golf and also headed up the Ornamental Committee.

By far, her big accomplishment at Harbour Ridge was in starting, with her friend Jan Hurd, what became known as, "A Harbour Ridge Christmas for Hope Rural School." Together with Jan and their Committee,  made sure that every child and family member of the students who attended Hope Rural School in Indiantown, received gifts from their "Wish List."  The parents were given blankets, towels and food vouchers to Stuart Fine Foods and Publix.  A pre-Christmas celebration was held at the school in early December and the children performed for the many Harbour Ridge members who attended the party to thank them for the gifts they and their families received. This tradition has continued and been carried on by many of her friends here at Harbour Ridge. It is truly a loved event by the teachers, staff, children and families of Hope Rural School and looked forward to with excitement every year.  This Christmas will mark 25 years of this wonderful celebration.

She will be missed by all of her family and many friends.....A life well spent.
