Leo was born in Scranton, PA the first son of Francis X. and Mary (Crane) Hopkins. They had ten children, four boys and six girls. Leo loved his large extended family which included over 50 nieces and nephews and their spouses and children. Helen's family, also from Scranton, was equally important to Leo. There were almost as many nieces and nephews on his wife's side of this large family. Leo was always the happiest when he could share time with his family.

Leo was a World War II veteran. He served aboard the USS Franklin CV-13 one of 24 Essex class carriers used in the war. To this day it is still the most decorated ship in US Naval history. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945.

After entering into private life Leo began a lifelong career in Sales. He began selling meat for Swift and company in Scranton. He had a stint as a record salesman for Capital records but then returned to selling fine meats to restaurants and country clubs for the rest of his professional career. He settled his family in Syracuse, NY. He ultimately became successful enough to establish his own company, Leo F. Hopkins, Inc. He loved the lake house he owned on Otisco Lake, NY. He always wanted to live in Florida and move away from the snowy Syracuse winters. He was fortunate to retire at 58 and move to Stuart, FLl with his wife and enjoy a long retirement.
