Obituary of Leonard Schmitt
Leonard P. "Smitty" Schmitt, 90, of Palm City, Florida, died December 16, 2012 at the Palm City Nursing and Restorative Care Center, Palm City.
Born in Palm Bay, Florida, he had been a resident of the Treasure Coast for 34 years, having moved from West Palm Beach. He also had lived in Melbourne, Florida.
During World War II he served in the U. S. Army Air Force attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He flew as a crewmember on a B-24 Liberator. He participated in over 400 hours in bombing missions over the Himalayas, better known as the HUMP. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with cluster, the Air Medal with cluster and the Good Conduct Medal.
Before retiring he helped promote and establish Dandee Bakeries, one of the leading bakeries in Florida. He started his career as a route salesman and retired as general manager of the Fort Pierce Bakery Division in 1987.
He was of the Catholic Faith and had been a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, Fort Pierce. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and past president of Holy Name School in West Palm Beach.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Muriel M. Schmitt of Palm City; daughters, Marcia L. Wehrell of Port St. Lucie, FL and Elaine Schmitt of Palm City; brothers, William "Bill" Schmitt of Melbourne, Edward J. Schmitt of Palm Bay, Walter Schmitt of Lancaster, California and Jerome Schmitt of Palm Bay; sisters, Rita M. Karpinski of Allentown, Pennsylvania and Veronica Philabaum of Palm Bay; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.. He was preceded in death by a son, Leonard P. Schmitt, Jr. and brothers, Nick Schmitt, Louis Schmitt, George Schmitt and Frank Schmitt and sisters, Barbara Ruby and Antoinette Lauve.
SERVICES: There will be a memorial service at 2:00 PM on January 8, 2013 at the Forest Hills Funeral Homes, Palm City Chapel with military honors provided by the Patrick Air Force Base Honor Guard.
