Obituary For Lola Sylvia Brissett James
Lola Sylvia Brissett James was born to Adolphus and Louise Brissett on November 18,1931. The fourth child and the only girl in a family of six boys, Lola completed her formal education at St. Paul's Anglican Church School then began an apprenticeship with a local dressmaker. A quick learner, she perfected her craft as a Seamstress, later she was employed by the West Indies Sugar Company in Frome, Westmoreland Jamaica, before migrating to the UK in 1957.
Upon arrival in the UK, she enrolled in Nursing School where she completed her Training with distinction and advanced to specialization in Midwifery at King's College where her professor was the gynecologist of the royal family. Lola held a number of nursing and midwifery positions in the UK, then migrated with her husband, Lloyd James to Canada after their marriage in 1964, where her daughter Marcia Whitelocke joined them. Out of their union came the birth of her beloved son David L.S. James.
Lola was adventurous and loved to travel, so she travelled to the US from Canada to Florida where she worked for the Florida Hospital Health System in Punta Gorda before moving on to West Palm Beach and Port St Lucie where she was employed by public and private Hospitals, Clinics and Nursing Homes.
Lola became an Seventh Day Adventist as a teenager in Jamaica through her older brother Melmuth Brissett and was a very faithful servant of the Lord. She held many positions in her home churches in Jamaica, UK, Canada and the USA. She attended the Port St Lucie church where she became very active in church growth, held many positions including deaconess and elder. Lola sang in the choir and had a rich alto voice. I can still hear her singing "How Cheering Is The Christian's Hope"…. "while toiling here below, It buoys us up while passing through this wilderness of woe". Oh how sweet it will be to hear her again as she rings out that song in the heavenly choir. Let's all try to make heaven our goal.
Lola was a prayer warrior and had just about everyone that she knew on her Prayer List. Upon completion of a conversation with Lola, she would hot have allowed you to go until she prayed with you.
Lola retired in 2001, however she did not retire from proclaiming the word of the Lord nor from helping those who were in need of help. She loved to travel and one of those countries which she visited was the city of Jerusalem in Israel. She was so very happy that she was able to walk where Jesus once walked and to see some of the places which she read about in the Bible.
Lola had a huge passion for gardening, those of us who have visited her home, know that her garden includes several mango trees, ackee trees, citrus trees and pineapple to name a few. She was very generous when she harvested produce from her garden. She shared with her family, friends and even strangers. Those of us who reside far away were also blessed with Lola's delicious mangos which arrived via US Mail. A legacy that Lola has left is that of fruit trees, she planted, watered and prayed over for many of us here today.
Lola's health began to fail in recent years, so in 2015 she moved to Atlanta with her daughter Marcia Fraser,son-in-law Michael Fraser and her grandchildren. Even though she felt comfortable with her family in Atlanta, she always wanted to return to her own home and church family in Port St Lucie. Shortly after she returned home her condition worsened and she passed on May 24, 2021.
She was preceeded in death by her parents Adolphus and Louise Brissett, former husband, Lloyd S. James, her brothers, Eglon Reid (Millicent), Vincent Reid(Eglah), Victor Brissett, Ransford Brissett(Marion), Canute Brissett(Lydia).
She leaves to mourn, her brother Melmuth Brissett and sister-in-law Hortense Brissett, sister-in-law Eglah Reid, her daughter Marcia W. Fraser (Michael Fraser) and son David L.S. James (Sheyla) Grandchildren: Michael Fraser II (Cheriece), Matthew Fraser and Malik Fraser, Jordyn Goings James, Amarah R. James, Great grandchildren: Michael S. Fraser III, CharLeigh R. Fraser, Arielle Jaedyn McCoy and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Pastor Wayne Hewlett, members of the First Seventh-Day Adventist
