Lucette Jean-Jacques died on Thursday, July 11, 2019. She was born Lucette Duplan in Jacmel, Haiti on January 28, 1926.  She attended nursing school at her father's recommendation although she wanted to pursue a career in medicine. However, she excelled in her studies. Although She was proud to be the valedictorian of her nursing class of 1954, she never boasted of her accomplishment.

Having completed her studies, she decided to take advantage of a program that was recruiting nursing students to work in Maine. She remained there for two years and moved to Brooklyn, New York. She worked as a nurse in several hospitals in New York City and Brooklyn until she moved to Florida.

With her earnings as a nurse, Lucette was able to support her siblings and countless relatives financially. She supported two of her younger siblings with medical school expenses. Lucette's generosity was expansive; she sponsored about ten relatives to come to the United States as permanent residents and provided shelter to anyone who was in need of a place to stay.

Lucette bought her first house in Queens, NY in 1968. The house was a sanctuary for relatives and friends who wanted a safe, comfortable and peaceful place.  Lucette was the matriarch of the household; the person whose love, compassion and understanding kept everyone living in harmony. It was no small feat considering the fact there were more than twenty people in the house. She was the one you trusted with your outmost secrets and knew with great certainty she would listen and give her opinion without being judgmental. She abhors gossips and never spoken a bad word about anyone.

Lucette started Legion of Mary at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Port St. Lucie. She served simultaneously as president and secretary until she was ninety-one years old. She was also a member of the Eucharistic Apostle of Divine Mercy at the same church for several years. She volunteered as a spiritual counselor for one of the local nursing home residents once a week for several years and continued until she was ninety-one years old.

She is survived by her sister Olga; her daughter Ketty and her son in law Bob; her nephews and nieces Patrick, Sandra, Sasha, Eddie, Karine, Louis, Gaston Jr., Danielle along with their spouses; several grand nephews and grandnieces; her "grandchildren" Fabrice, Ashely and Dehnia; her surrogate niece Wilhelminda, as well as countless extended family members and friends whose love for her was unconditional.

Lucette will be missed my many. She will always remain the ultimate matriarch of the family. She was an example of generosity, humility, compassion, kindness and that will be her legacy.
