Obituary

Mark Guttenberg

PGA Professional

Mark Guttenberg was born November 10, 1952, in Washington, D.C. He devoted his life to family, golf, teaching, and writing. He attended Florida State University on a golf scholarship, where he met his wife, Leslie, in 1973. They married in 1977 and shared more than five decades together.

Mark played professional golf, including at the highest level on the PGA Tour. He won more than 100 tournaments throughout his career. In 1982, he partnered his love for tournament golf with teaching and coaching. He became one of Virginia’s leading teachers, earning Golf Digest’s No. 1 ranking in the state of Virginia for eight consecutive years and being named Mid Atlantic PGA Teacher of the Year in 1990. Mark’s teaching ability is best exemplified in his coaching of Leslie, who through his mentorship became an accomplished member of the LPGA. A gifted writer, Mark spent 11 years as a staff writer for a golf magazine and published approximately 150 articles.

Mark found a new role as a father when he and Leslie welcomed their son Taylor in 1991. As a proud son, Taylor could often be found in the gallery at Mark’s tournaments or on the lesson tee.

After a storied career in Virginia, Mark and Leslie finally relocated to the PGA Village in Florida. There, Mark found a new purpose in volunteering with The Warrior’s Journey Golf mission, supporting military veterans through golf instruction and travel. In recent years, Mark openly shared his journey with two rare forms of leukemia, drawing strength from his faith, family, friends, and the game he loved. Mark is survived by his wife, Leslie; his son, Taylor; and his daughter-in-law, Jenny.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on October 18, 2026, at Evergreen Country Club in Haymarket, Virginia. An additional celebration of life will be held at the PGA Village in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, on a date to be determined. Also, his spirit is richly attached to The Warriors Journey Golf mission.
