Monica Fiddis passed away peacefully on September 14, 2026, at the age of 96, surrounded by the love of her family.

Monica was born on July 29, 1930, in Banes, Oriente, Cuba, to Alberto and Avis Campbell, both of Jamaican heritage. The values of family, strength, dignity, and perseverance that shaped her early life remained with her throughout her 96 years.

Monica was married for 53 years to her beloved husband, Almond D. Fiddis, who preceded her in death in 2018. Monica and Almond made their home on Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn, New York, where they raised their only child, David. Monica shared an especially precious bond with David and was immensely proud of the man he became and the family he built. During their years in Brooklyn, Monica and Almond formed lifelong friendships with people who became much more than friends, they became family. They later moved to Florida, carrying those cherished relationships and memories with them.

Monica had a natural gift for caring for others. Her compassion led her to a career at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, which was within walking distance of her home. There, she devoted herself to helping patients feel cared for, comforted, and supported. Her work was more than a job, it reflected the kindness and concern for others that were such an important part of who she was.

That caring spirit continued into Monica’s retirement. She volunteered as a foster grandparent at Whispering Pines Elementary, sharing her time, encouragement, and affection with the children. Her service gave her another opportunity to do what came so naturally to her, helping others feel supported, valued, and cared for.

Monica was glamorous, elegant, and unforgettable. She loved beautiful clothes and always carried herself with style, grace, and dignity. When Monica entered a room, she had an unmistakable presence. Beneath her elegance was a strong and loving woman who brought warmth to her family and left them with countless stories, lessons, and memories to treasure.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Almond; her sister, Dahlia; her brother, Harold; and her twin brother, Dudley.

Monica leaves to cherish her memory her son, David; her daughter-in-law, Carol; her grandchildren, Racquel, Kirk, and Kevin; Kirk’s wife, Neesa; and great-grandson, Kason. Her family is also awaiting the birth of a second great-grandson, who is due in November. She also leaves behind many beloved relatives and dear friends whose lives were touched by her presence.

Monica’s beauty extended far beyond her appearance. It could be seen in the strength with which she lived, the love she gave to her family, the compassion she showed to others, and the lasting legacy she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, relative, friend, and the cherished matriarch of her family.
