Doctor Nathaniel P McParland, a long time resident of Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club  born 1/28/1925, passed away June 5, 2020. Nat was born in Chicago,IL and a member of The Park Ridge Country Club: the Elks Club of Palm City; American Legion Post 62; B.P.O.E. Lodge #1526 Des Plaines, IL, ; Stuart Lodge #1870 and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
He served in the US Army 99th Infantry Division from 1943 until he was discharged in 1945, participating in the Seige of Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded and captured Christmas Day, 1944. He spent many months in a German prisoner of war camp and after the war ended was awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, and the Belgian Fourragere 1940 for meritorious service.  He  attended Louisiana State University and received his medical degree from Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine in 1955. After completion of his internship at Resurrection Hospital, he became the chief general surgical resident at the West Side VA Hospital. His career as a vascular surgeon continued at both the Resurrection Hospital and Holy Family Hospital in Des Plaines ,IL . He was the medical director for VictorComptometer Inc; Bankers Life and Casualty Company;  a founding member of UMAC Inc, an independent medical review company and Emeritus Chairman of the Retirement Research Foundation . While at HRYCC, Nat and his wife, Mary Ann, were avid golfers and loved to travel. He was active with the Kane Center Council on Aging of Martin County and received the Sage award for giving back to the community . He was also active with the MacArthur Foundation for many years. He was an enthusiastic, generous benefactor of numerous charities including St Judes Hospital, Indian Charities,and Veterans Helping Heroes.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Ann, his daughter Jane Ann Hammer, his son Michael McParland and brother Dr. Robert V McParland. He is survived by his son in law Richard Hammer and two grand children Christopher and Megan in addition to numerous cousins,nieces and friends, too many to be counted.
His sense of humor, quiet kindness and generosity will be remembered and missed by all who knew him. He will be laid to rest beside his wife at Forest Hills Cemetery June 17, at 10 am after a mass of Christian burial at Holy Redeemer Church. A viewing will be at Forest Hill Funeral Home Tuesday June 16 from 4 to 6pm.
