In Loving Memory of Dr. Richard Sheridan O'Hara

Dr. Richard S. O'Hara passed away peacefully on December 30, 2023, at the age of 93, surrounded by his cherished family in Palm City, FL. Formerly of Andover, MA, and Osterville, MA, he left an indelible mark on the lives he touched.

Born in New York City on August 3, 1930, Dick was the son of the late Thomas L. O'Hara and Mabel A. (Sheridan) O'Hara. He is survived by sister Jane O'Hara Larkin and was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas L. O'Hara, Jr., and sister Alice O'Hara Weibe.

Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary Ellen Reade (Winn) O'Hara and their eight children; Carolyn (Michael) Shannon, Richard (Holly) O'Hara, Jr., Christopher (Elissa) O'Hara, Alyson (Hugh) Donlon, Sheridan O'Hara, Matthew (Kristen) O'Hara, Dwight O'Hara and Jamie O'Hara. He was a cherished "Poppa" to Michael, Christopher, and Thomas Shannon; Kell O'Hara; Jack, Grace, and Katherine O'Hara; Catherine, James, and Mary Reade Donlon; Patrick and Reade O'Hara; Andrew O'Hara; and Jack and Bridget O'Hara.

Dick grew up in Pelham Manor, NY. He was involved in Scouting and received the Eagle Scout Award, the highest and most coveted rank in Scouting. He earned varsity letters in baseball, basketball and football, the latter of which earned him the moniker "triple threat" for his running, passing and kicking proficiency. Dick was also the President of his high school senior class.

Dick was an excellent student, graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biology from The College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA in 1952 (B.S. Biology) and earned his M.D. at Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, MA in 1956.

He completed five years of surgical residency at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH, followed by two years of active duty during the Korean War as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. Dick was stationed at Newport Naval Hospital, Newport, RI, and also served as the Block Island visiting doctor. He was honorably discharged in 1963.

After the Navy, he co-founded Andover Surgical Associates, serving as its Managing Partner for 31 years. Dick performed surgery at Lawrence General Hospital (LGH) in Lawrence, MA, and Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, MA. Dick also served as the Chief of the Medical Staff at LGH.

A talented golfer, Dick was a two-time Club Champion at North Andover Country Club (N. Andover, MA), was a member at Oyster Harbors Club (Osterville, MA), and Harbor Ridge Yacht & Country Club (Palm City, FL). He took pride in being a member of Bay State Seniors and Hickory Sticks in MA, retiring from golf with an amazing 7 "aces". Dick's Catholic faith was an integral part of his being. He volunteered as a lector both at St. Augustine's and at Holy Redeemer.

A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at Holy Redeemer at 10am on January 12, 2024. An additional Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at St. Augustine Parish, Andover, MA, in the summer of 2024. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
