Robert Storm Vanderzee, a longtime resident of Port St. Lucie, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at the age of 95 and will now rest in peace with his beloved wife Janet who predeceased him.
He was born in Harper Hospital, Detroit, Michigan on September 3, 1930, the oldest son of Storm and Marie Shurly Vanderzee. He grew up in Grosse Ile, Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan with a Batchelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He served two years in the Army 1 Guided Missile Brigade in Fort Bliss, Texas, during the Korean War.
Prior to his serving as director of engineering at Carlisle SynTec in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, his work for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company as Manager in London England of the Engineering Laboratory in 1968 and 1969 took him to many locations across Europe.
An avid hobbyist, Vanderzee was fascinated by electronics while a teenager and fabricated several superheterodyne radios and a transmitter that could broadcast music to his neighborhood over unused AM frequencies. He owned three airplanes, is a FAA commercial pilot, and holds a pilot's license from the Aero Club de France.
Vanderzee owned his first sailboat at age thirteen, later upgraded to larger racing sailboats and chartered yachts to sail on Chesapeake Bay, in the Bahamas, and in the British Virgin Islands.
He served as Commodore for two yacht clubs.
Bob found the love of his life, Janet Healy, and married her in 1972 inheriting her three beloved children and was happily married until her death in 2004.
He was the author of seven books. His work ranged from two biographies of family members, three murder mysteries and two books that present a unique concept of the universe that engage with the hotly debated questions of Darwin's evolution vs Intelligent Design and the future of humanity. Whether writing for the historical record, the science versus theist debate, or for pure enjoyment, Vanderzee's work was meant to engage readers with new ways of thinking.
He is survived by a brother John Vanderzee of Vero Beach, a sister, Anne Creed, of Wayzata, MN, daughters Gale "Holly" Hoert of Middleburg Heights, Ohio and Linda Evans of Macedonia, Ohio, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Contributions can be made to the Treasure Coast Hospice. Arrangements for his inurnment beside Janet are under the direction of Forest Hills Memorial Park, Palm City, FL.
