Obituary of Ruth Hornberger

Ruth was born in Philadelphia on December 27, 1913. She passed on at the age of 96 at Waters Edge at Sand Hill Cove on May 16, 2010. Ruth married Joseph Cameron Miller in 1934. They raised their family, daughter, Eleanor and son, Joseph Jr. in Bala Cywyd, PA.

Ruth worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Bryn Mawr College's Early Childhood Education and the Child Study Institute for twenty years. This was a rewarding part of her life experience.

In 1973 Ruth and her husband Joe, retired to Stuart, FL. They enjoyed many years of golf, travel and abiding friendships during their time in Stuart and Palm City.

Ruth was a past President of Episcopal Church Women's organization at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Stuart. She has been active member of her beloved church. She volunteered at St. Mary's Cracker Barrel Thrift Shop for 25 years.

During this time Ruth and Joe were actively involved in their children's and grand-children's lives. They visited them in Stuart during winter vacations and Ruth and Joe traveled north every summer for an extended stay in South Bend, IN and Becket, MA.

After Joe Miller's passing, Ruth married Louis Hornberger, a family friend and her life was enriched by his family, daughter, Suzanne and son, Bob Hornberger.

In 1997 Ruth moved into Sand Hill Cove. She found an abundance of joy and friendships in this community. She was an avid bridge player, occasionally taking first place in Duplicate Bridge. She and her good friend George Haskill enjoyed companionship, church, dinners, and other Sand Hill Cove activities together for almost 10 years. George's daughter Sherry, Diane and Lisa were dear friends.

Ruth will be remembered by her children, Eleanor and Joseph Jr. and his wife, Marilyn and grandchildren, Jess (and his wife Sally), Jenny, Stephanie (and her husband Ryan) for her grace and deeply loving spirt expressed by touch, a prayer, a card and an encouraging smile.

She expressed a wish to shepherd her great grandchildren into our lives. And so she did; Jack age 6, Annie Marie age 3 and Esme 2.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all the staff at Sand Hill Cove, Waters Edge and Treasure Coast Hospice for their skillful and loving care of our mother.

A memorial service will be private for the family in Connecticut in September
