Obituary

Shirley Ann Ashmead was born March 25th 1935 in New Alexandria, Ohio to Martha Blanche Staib & Lawrence Fellows.  Shirley passed away on April 19, 2023, mainly due to a failing heart.

Shirley & Joe met in Steubenville Ohio.  They were married in 1957 and moved to South Florida in 1961.  Shirley was a stay-at-home mom of 5 for over a decade.  In 1978 Shirley was named "Most Valuable Cheerleader" at Jefferson Davis middle school for her willingness to drive the squad to all their away games.  She was a smart and competent woman.  She joined Weight Watchers and was soon working for them first as a "lecturer" then as a bookkeeper.  That bookkeeping position led to another at Beach Point Condominium in Palm Beach.  Shirley worked there for many years and attended college to allow her to get accredited and become the property manager of the 105 units of Beach Point.  Shirley managed the property for many years handling all the complicated aspects of a beachfront community.  Shirley even managed the recovery from the largest high-rise fire in Palm Beach County history.

Upon retirement Shirley and Joe moved to Palm City to be near grandchildren.  Despite being retired Shirley began working as a receptionist at Sandhill Cove Retirement Living Community where she formed a new tight circle of dear friends with Eileen, Stacia & Pam.  Shirley enjoyed travel and had visited Hawaii, Europe, Alaska & took a cross country train trip to California.  Gaga was a dedicated grandmother planning annual trips with her daughter and her four youngest grandchildren.  Gaga especially enjoyed visiting her grandchildren in Connecticut where they filled their time with Monopoly, bonfires and Shady Glen ice cream sodas.  As an avid reader and sudoku player (trained by Grandson John Austin) Shirley was mentally sharp until her passing.  Everyone remembered her as a kind and caring person who was happy & fun.  Shirley was a good cook, excellent dancer and played the piano.  She and daughter Leslie tried to learn tennis but never quite got the hang of it.  Shirley Ashmead dedicated her life to her family as her mother before her, Grammy, had done.

Predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Joseph Daniel Ashmead, son James J. Collins & son John Ashley Ashmead.  Survived by her only brother Lawrence Fellows, daughter in law Marguerite Collins, daughter Leslie M Felton (spouse Jack), son Joseph Vaughn Ashmead (spouse Debra), daughter Ruth Ann Ashmead (spouse Daniel Blake), grandchildren Jesse J Collins (spouse Andjela), Katie Marie, Madison Blake, Cameron Blake, John Austin Ashmead, & great grandchildren Destin & Dia Collins.

No public memorial is planned at present.  In lieu of flowers please share a memory of Shirley on the Forest Hills guestbook as that is the purpose of life, making memories, which are all we really have in the end. (foresthillspalmcityflorida. com)
